Did you know you can make your own cat toys? It's true! And one of the best things you can create is a "puzzle feeder."
These clever devices didn't start in pet stores. They were originally developed for zoo animals and lab animals. Researchers noticed something amazing: when animals had to work a little to get their food—pushing, rolling, or solving a simple puzzle—they were happier. They showed fewer signs of boredom and stress, and they became more curious and active. Their overall well-being improved.
The best part? You don't need to buy a puzzle feeder. You can make one yourself using stuff you'd normally throw away.

Beginner Level: Start with a clean, dry plastic water bottle. Make sure it's completely empty. Use scissors or a knife to cut a few holes in the sides. The holes should be just a bit bigger than your cat's kibble, so the food can fall out without too much struggle.

Advanced Level: Once your cat gets the hang of it, you can make it trickier. Try a bottle with a narrower neck, or only put a few holes in it. You can even tape the bottle inside a small cardboard box with an entry hole, so your cat has to bat the bottle around inside the box to get the food out. The goal is to get them using their paws and nose to interact with it.

Beginner Level: Take an empty cardboard toilet paper or paper towel tube. Drop a handful of dry food inside. Then, simply pinch the ends of the tube closed. Your cat will have to bat it around to get the kibble to roll out the open ends.
You can also seal both ends shut (with a bit of tape or by folding the cardboard) and then cut a few small holes in the tube. Now the food only comes out when the holes line up just right.

Advanced Level: Get creative! Connect multiple tubes together with tape to make a little maze. Hide the tubes under a towel or inside a shoebox with holes cut in it. Let the food play hide-and-seek with your cat.
When you first introduce a puzzle feeder, don't make it too hard. Start easy. You might even use a clear container so your cat can see the food inside, or let them watch you put the treats in. The goal is fun, not frustration.
Only put a small amount of food in at first—just a few pieces of their regular kibble or some favorite treats. As your cat becomes a puzzle master, you can gradually increase the amount and the difficulty.

If your cat doesn't get much playtime, consider using a puzzle feeder for part or even all of their daily meals. It turns a boring routine into a stimulating hunt that satisfies their natural instincts.
So, before you recycle that next bottle or cardboard tube, think twice. With just five minutes and a little imagination, you can give your cat a brand new game that makes them happier, healthier, and a whole lot more entertained.
