The Saluki is a gentle, dignified, and independent breed. They form deep bonds with their family but can be aloof with strangers. Their strong prey drive is instinctual.
Requires daily opportunities for vigorous, off-leash running in a securely fenced area. Long walks and mental stimulation are also important. They are sprinters, not endurance athletes.
Their short, silky coat requires minimal grooming, but regular brushing is recommended. They are sensitive to cold and may need a coat in winter. Provide a high-quality diet suitable for active breeds.
Gentle but reserved; best with older, calm children
Usually good, especially with other sighthounds
With socialization; high prey drive may be a concern
Not ideal; requires space and a secure area to run
Not for first-time owners; requires an understanding of sighthound traits
Moderate, requires patience and positive reinforcement
Generally healthy, but can be prone to cardiac issues and certain cancers. Regular vet check-ups are recommended. They are sensitive to anesthesia.
