The Malamute is a friendly, loyal, and affectionate companion, but also dignified and strong-willed. They are pack-oriented and bond closely with their family, but their independent nature and high intelligence can make training a challenge requiring consistency and patience.
This is a high-energy working breed requiring substantial daily exercise, including long walks, hikes, or pulling activities like carting or sledding. Without adequate physical and mental stimulation, they can become destructive.
The dense, double coat requires brushing several times a week, with heavy seasonal shedding (blowing coat) requiring daily grooming. They need high-quality food formulated for large, active breeds. Their nails grow quickly and need regular trimming.
